Windows 11 Microsoft’s most reliable and stable operating system, yet some users still have problems with sound working properly or acting strangely, much like they did in Windows 10.
Windows 11 is susceptible to sound problems due to third-party hardware and configurations. Try these suggestions to resolve the problem if you are having difficulty hearing anything through your Windows 11 laptop’s speakers.
If you haven’t had sound since the beginning, or have just updated to Windows 11, install the appropriate software before trying to troubleshoot.
Windows 11 provides access to many sound drivers. Windows 11 will automatically install drivers for your soundcard. However, you will almost always be better off downloading the official drivers from the sound card or laptop manufacturer than to rely on the generic ones.
You don’t need to get too technical about solving audio problems. Instead, you should start by reviewing the basics:
Sometimes audio issues are so simple you don’t realize it. So, go over the basics.
Windows 11 comes with an auto-activated audio troubleshooter, which will fix any Windows sound problem without any additional steps. It is recommended that you first use the troubleshooter before moving on to any of the advanced solutions:
You can now select the audio device to be checked and then let the troubleshooter take care of the rest.
The report will show if problems have been found, and what it is possible to fix them.
Windows 11 includes an Audio Enhancements feature which improves audio from your headphones or speakers. You will find Bass Boost and Headphone Virtualization as well as a Loudness Equalization.
It is disabled by default because it may cause problems with certain sound devices. It’s possible that Audio Enhancements were enabled by someone else without you being aware. Therefore, it is worthwhile to ensure the feature is disabled.
Try playing the audio once more to verify that it is working properly.
Your computer may have more than one sound device. If this happens, your computer might not be able to hear the audio. One example would be an audio output on the monitor. HDMI and DisplayPort Connections can also carry audio, which is why many monitors include speakers or headphones outputs. Windows could detect that this is the last connected audio device and switch to it.
You can change audio devices using quick settings:
Select the right-facing, arrow to disable audio devices so they aren’t selected by Windows Choose where to play sound. Don’t Allow Next to Allow apps and Windows to use this device for audio.
You can change the default device from another device by clicking here. Windows will then factor it in over any other devices. Select the drop-down menu to your right Set as default sound device You can choose to make it the default.
The sound may not be playing for some applications. This could indicate that an app is not assigned the right audio output device. Try closing the app, then opening it again. If this doesn’t work you can verify that the output device has been correctly assigned.
Tip: This is an excellent way for different apps to play their sounds through your device Headphones and speakerssimultaneously.
Windows Audio might have lost its ability to function for some reason. It may not be due to hardware driver or setting issues. You can quickly fix this by starting the service again manually:
Your audio should now be available.
You can also try these general steps to troubleshoot if you don’t get the audio-specific fix you were looking for:
Audio problems could be caused by recent changes to your computer. If possible, undo any previous events that led to the audio not working.
A separate audio device is a good option if you are having trouble getting your computer to use its built-in soundcard.
These audio devices can be used as separate audio devices if they are Bluetooth-based or USB-based. If you don’t get the correct sound through another device, your motherboard’s audio hardware might have been damaged. Driver reinstallation may not work.
