A “multiport adapter” is another option. These are typically smaller than docking stations and have only two to three ports, but they can connect many peripherals.

Although this sounds wonderful, it is important to be aware of how many monitors the dock can support, their resolution, and the refresh rate they are able to run at.

Recently, for example, we tried the 4K HDMI port of a dock that was connected to an M1 MacBook Pro. The dock can only support 30hz at 4K resolution, and not 60hz. We used an adapter which supports DisplayPort over USB1-C to make a 4K external display work at 60Hz.

A docking station called a “universal docking station” may be what you have seen. A docking station that can accommodate multiple laptops is this special kind.
