If an XPS document has been saved to your computer, you may have also seen Microsoft XPS Document Writer. XPS file format is Microsoft’s rival to the PDF file format. While it may not have enjoyed as much success with PDF files, it’s still a popular feature in many Windows versions.
We’ll be explaining what Microsoft XPS Document Writer looks like, how it functions and how you can get rid of it if no longer necessary.
XPS, also known as OXPS and OpenXPS is a standardized format file (with the.xps extension). It stands for Open XML Paper Specification. An XPS document describes a document that has a fixed layout and can have any number of pages. XPS files can be thought of as Microsoft’s PostScript and PDF versions.
XPS files, like PDF, are designed to provide “what you see and what you get” functionality. It doesn’t matter how you view an XPS document, they will always be the same regardless of where it is printed.
Two programs can be used in Windows to view XPS file. The XPS Viewer app and Microsoft Reader are preinstalled in Windows. They allow users to see XPS files, add digital signatures, and much like Adobe Acrobat.
Microsoft will continue to support XPS files but the industry standard is still the PDF format.
Microsoft XPS Document Writer MXDW is a tool that allows you to create documents from Microsoft XPS printer driver This driver allows Windows to create XPS file using Windows apps. The driver was first introduced with Windows XP Service Pack 2 (Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 10) Windows 11.
When you need to make an XPS file from an app that does not allow you to save a file in XPS format, the MXDW is a great tool.
Once the MXDW has been installed on Windows, you will see it in the print queue. If you want to print a document from your Windows PC, click the printer dropdown menu Microsoft XPS Document Writer Click to print and choose printer option OK.
Next, you will be prompted for a filename to use in the XPS document. After entering this information, press the “Enter” button OK You can go back. Once the file is saved, you can access it at C:\Users\username\Documents.

For fixed layouts, PDF continues to be the preferred choice file formats. . It is the industry standard. Many more programs offer PDF support over XPS.
Microsoft still supports XPS file support, but the majority of users will not use this feature. However, XPS files and the Microsoft XPS Document Writer are not really needed. There is also no compelling reason to remove them from your PC.
